Abstract
It has already been noted in Chapter 1 that polymers are substances of high molecular weight whose molecules comprise one or more small chemical units repeated many times over, and that the chemical reaction by which these molecules are produced from the corresponding monomers is known as polymerisation. Polymerisation reactions are classified into two broad groups:
-
1.
addition polymerisation, in which the monomer units become attached to one another without any molecule being eliminated; and
-
2.
condensation polymerisations, in which a small molecule is eliminated during each step of the polymer-building reaction.
