Abstract
The vegetation system may be viewed from the perspective of landscape, niche, or response. The analytical methods formulated for the specific cases, however, need not to be isolated, since landscape, niche and response are interrelated parts of a complex system. When viewed from a landscape perspective, the spatial pattern of the system comes into focus. The spatial dispersion of a species is a case in point. The niche perspective requires placing the system within the confines of an ecological space. The response perspective leads to focusing on trajectories, and thus, on the niche shape.
