Part of the book series: Tasks for vegetation science ((TAVS,volume 10))

Abstract

The potential of information theory in Vegetation Science is broad and it entails possible applications in modelling, along the examples set by the early workers in cell biology (e.g. Yockey, Platzman & Quastler 1958), and quantification of statistical relationships as in the analytical methods of Kullback (1959). But the actual examples suggest to us that the role to be played in modelling is not as clearly understood as in data analysis.
