Abstract

Although Gracilaria Greville is a reasonably welldefined genus of the Gigartinales, the taxonomy of its species is notoriously chaotic (see Bird & McLachlan 1982; Bird, et al 1982). As some species are of economic value, it is necessary that at least these entities be well characterized and made recognizable. Identification of commercial stocks of Gracilaria has been based on gross morphology and, in some instances, has been incorrect [G. verrucosa (Huds.) Papenf. in Chile, Kim 1970] or suspect [G. debilis (Forssk.) Børg. in the Caribbean, Newton 1953; G. bursa-pastoris (Gmel.) Silva in Hawaii, Renfrew 1983]. It is becoming increasingly apparent that certain minor but fundamental differences among morphologically similar taxa merit consideration if species are to be correctly defined. Further, it is equally important to sample widely for such features, to determine their uniformity throughout populations and under a variety of environmental conditions. Herein we consider several aspects of reproductive structures and assess their taxonomic utility.
