Abstract
There are 11 families, 76 genera and 150 species of red seaweed in Taiwan, China (Shen & Fan 1950), of which Gracilaria, Gelidium, Porphyra and Bangia have been utilized locally. Some abundant red seaweeds still have not been utilized, such as Eucheuma of the family Solieriaceae, which can be eaten fresh or extracted for agar. Besides carrageenan which is extracted, seaweed supplies various needs in the chemical industry. It can be mass cultured in shallow tropical and subtropical warm water areas (Doty 1973, 1975).
