Abstract
Whether sexual reproduction occurs in the genus Porphyra has long been debated. Even in the species that are considered to reproduce sexually, there is also some difference of opinion as to the site of meiosis (Tseng & Chang, 1955; Mumford & Cole, 1977). It was Hawkes (1978) who first provided conclusive documentation of the occurrence of sexual reproduction, in Porphyra gardneri.
