Abstract

L-thryoxine (18.9 nmol) injected into chicken eggs accelerates the development of lung function, the decrease of liver metabolites, and the onset of hatching. A low dose of thiourea (13.11 μmol) exerts an opposite effect on these parameters. Under the influence of a high dose of thiourea (32.8 μmol) hatching, lung ventilation and the normal increase of somatic activity are suppressed. Furthermore, the increase of O2 consumption and the changes of O2 and CO2 concentration in the air cell occurring normally towards the end of incubation are also prevented under these conditions. The results suggest a decisive role for pulmonary gas exchange in initiating hatching.
