Sampling, Identification and Quantitative Determination of Biogenic and Anthropogenic Hydrocarbons in Forestal Areas

  • Conference paper
Physico-Chemical Behaviour of Atmospheric Pollutants

Summary

An analytical procedure for the collection, analysis and quantitative determination of biogenic and anthropogenic hydrocarbons (HC’s) from C5 to C10 in forestal areas is presented. The samples are collected on adsorption traps packed with Carbopack B which is a highly inert material with respect to oxidizing agents andallows a complete recovery of the various components by programmed thermal desorption. Monoterpene and alkylbenzene HC’s present in a pine forest at ppt level can be quantitatively determined by using a GC-MS apparatus operating in the Selected Ions Detection (SID) mode. Diurnal variations of the HC’s concentration within a pine forest are presented together with the Variation of the meteorological parameters and the O3 and NO2 concentration. The measurements were carried out during sunny days when photochemical smog episodes were observed.
