Absorption Spectrum and Kinetics of the NO3 Radical

Physico-Chemical Behaviour of Atmospheric Pollutants

Abstract

The photolysis of Cl2 in the presence of ClONO2 was used as a source of no 3 radicals via the reaction Cl + C1ONO2 → Cl2 + NO3. The absorption spectrum of N03 was recorded on a diode array spectrometer and the absolute absorption cross section at 662 nm determined from kinetic measurements was 1.63 × 10−17 cm2 molecule−1. Secondary chemistry in the system appeared to involve reactions of Cl and ClO with NO3 and estimates of the rate constants for these reactions were obtained.
