Abstract

The rate of development of the theory of black holes has slowed considerably since the late 1960’s and early 1970’s when a number of major breakthroughs occurred. Nevertheless some important progress has been made during the past few years in our understanding of both the theoretical properties of black holes and their role in astrophysics. Much of this progress was reported at the workshop on “Physics and astrophysics of black holes” and abstracts of these contributions appear among “Contributions to Workshop B1” of the first part of the conference proceedings (Bertotti et al., 1983). In this report, I shall mention a number of other significant results which have been obtained recently and I also will discuss some important unresolved issues. My report will be biased in the direction of “theoretical” topics as opposed to “astrophysical” topics since I have followed developments of the former topics much more closely than those of the latter.
