Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 134))

Abstract

New observational results on γ ray bursts are discussed. The following points are considered : their classification, which is still not established

  • the spectral variability, continuum and features, which are important for determining the physical processes at work in the source,

  • precise localisations and the In N(>s) — 1n S distribution which analysed together are in favor of extended halo models although more data on these two distributions are needed to reject thick disc models alrealy proposed.

The implication of these analyses on the γ burst models are briefly discussed.

This analysis of observational results on gamma ray bursts will be limited to new information which has aided our progress in understanding this exciting phenomenon. A more general, detailed analysis of the characteristics of gamma ray bursts has been presented elsewhere (1,2,3).
