Summary
HI line observations of 10 bright spiral galaxies within 6° of the centre of the Virgo Cluster were made at a resolution of about 45″ using the VLA. HI disks within 2° of the cluster centre are HI deficient and much smaller than the optical disks, whereas disks outside 3° are normal. NGC 4254 and NGC 4654 situated at about 2° show asymmetric HI and optical structures suggesting the action of ram-pressure stripping. It is concluded that stripping is nearly complete and instantaneous and may account for the Hubble type segregation of spiral galaxies within rich clusters.
