Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to present the systems analysis approach to environmental impact assessment (EIA), and other ecological assessment methods which we are attempting to develop at the Environmental Management Unit, Imperial College, London University. Before embarking on a detailed discussion of this subject, there are four points which ought to be made. Although some of these may se elementary, they are worth repeating to provide the context to the paper. The systems approach to EIA, adopted by the Environmental Management Unit, will then be outlined and some case studies will be described to illustrate the approach.
