Identification of Non-Volatile Organics in Water Using Field Desorption Mass Spectrometry and High Performance Liquid Chromatography

  • Conference paper

Summary

Results obtained from the use of high-performance liquid chromatography and field desorption mass spectrometry for the separation and identification of non—volatile organics isolated from river and drinking waters are presented.

Complex mixtures of non-volatile organics with a wide diversity of structural types have been shown to be present in these water samples.

Among the non-volatile organics identified are poly chlorinated terphenyls, non-ionic and cationic surfactants, pharmaceuticals, pesticides and epoxy resin components. The majority of the identified compounds are anthropogenic in origin and many of them are biologically active.

Only a small proportion of the non-volatiles present have been identified and the others await further application of the techniques used here and the development of new techniques.
