Abstract
Agents do not only do something simpliciter but they often do what they do by doing something else. Consider, for instance, the following statements: ‘Lee killed John by shooting him’, ‘John ventilated the room by opening the window’, ‘Tom apologized by sending a bouquet of roses’, and ‘Bob signaled by extending his arm out the car window’. How are we to account for the ‘by’ of method in these statements?
