The Use of a Simultaneous Torsion and Mass-Loss Effusion Apparatus for Determining Vapour Pressures and Enthalpies of Sublimation

  • Chapter
Thermochemistry and Its Applications to Chemical and Biochemical Systems

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 119))

Abstract

The use of two techniques based on two different properties of a Knudsen gas provides information on both the vapour pressure and the composition of the vapour. With pure substances the mutual consistency of the two techniques can be tested. A description of the fully automated set-up is given. The usefulness and general applicability of the instrument is illustrated by the results obtained for a number of different substances each of which is representative for a group of closely related compounds. It should be emphasised that part of these results could not have been obtained using either technique on its own. We shall discuss the results for acetic acid, butanoic acid, L-alanine, TCNQ-TTF, 1,4-benzoquinone-hydroquinone, pp’-methane diphenyl isocyanate, theophylline and ammonium halides. Finally we shall discuss the two lines of research in which we are engaged at present.
