Abstract

The technique of batch calorimetry is a useful alternative to that of titration calorimetry for the simultaneous determination of K° and ΔH° values in homogeneous solution. Examples are given of the application of the batch calorimetric technique to acid-base reactions in nonaqueous solvents, and to the complexation of cations by crown ethers. It is shown how measurements in the latter system can yield, through suitable thermodynamic cycles, enthalpies and entropies of transfer from one solvent to another of cations complexed by crown ethers.
