Psychiatric Classification: The Status of So-Called “Diagnostic Criteria”

  • Chapter
Health, Disease, and Causal Explanations in Medicine

Part of the book series: Philosophy and Medicine ((PHME,volume 16))

Abstract

Psychiatric classification and concept formation have long been the subject of considerable controversy. The importance of operational diagnostic criteria is nowadays often stressed ([8], [12]). It is argued that the traditional kind of disease descriptions in terms of “typical manifestations” be abandoned in favour of precise statements of what observable traits are required for the diagnosis in question. The recent American classification [5] is much influenced by this kind of “operationalistic” philosophy.
