Interspecific Hybridisation in Vicia Section Faba: Comparison of Selfed and Hybrid Embryo and Endosperm

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Advances in Agricultural Biotechnology ((AABI,volume 11))

Abstract

In certain interspecific combinations involving Vicia faba (e.g. V. faba var. paucijuga x V johannis var. procumbens) fertilisation occurs frequently but embryos do not reach a sufficient size to be cultured by conventional techniques. To improve chances of rescuing and successfully culturing these very small embryos it is necessary to determine how far, and for how long, they will develop in vivo. In addition, comparison of rates of growth of embryo and endosperm in inter- and intraspecific crosses may lead to an understanding of the reasons for hybrid embryo abortion. Ways of delaying embryo abortion can then be explored.
