The Use of Isozyme Genes as Markers in the Population Genetics of Vicia Faba L.

Systems for Cytogenetic Analysis in Vicia Faba L.

Part of the book series: Advances in Agricultural Biotechnology ((AABI,volume 11))

Abstract

The extraction and identification of 26 esterase isozyme bands from newly expanded leaves of Vicia faba is described. Eight of these bands were shown to be controlled by three genes: one (designated A) with two alleles and two (B & C) each with three alleles. An experiment is reported showing the use of these isozyme gene to estimate outcrossing frequencies in bean populations enclosed in pollination cages. The use of isozyme techniques in other aspects of the population genetics of Vicia faba is discussed.
