Abstract

The effects of short wavelength composition modulations upon interdiffusion were evidenced in the Ag-Pd system by an x-ray diffraction technique. The general behavior of the interdiffusity versus the wavelength of the concentration wave was found in agreement with the nonlinear diffusion theory of Tsakalakos. Super-imposed on this general behavior, two anomalies were found which can be attributed respectively to, 1) a loss of coherency between the Ag-rich and Pd-rich regions, and 2) a screening singularity or an increase in the shear modulus (or both) such as was found in the Au-Ni system. The wavelength dependence of the interdiffusion coefficient yielded the first four gradient-energy for this system.
