Abstract
The Au-Zn and Au-Mg alloys with the incommensurate two-dimensional antiphase structures, containing 16–19 at.% Zn and 16–22 at.% Mg respectively, were investigated by high-resolution structure imaging method with the 1000 kV electron microscopy, and it was revealed that the actual domain configurations change delicately with the incommensurate periods along the two directions. “Domain-like” atomic arrangement was observed in the Au-Zn alloys: two types of “domains” with commensurate structures of the same unit cell size, 6a; x 5c, are arranged in such a characteristic way that the incommensurate periods are produced in the [100] and [001] directions. In the Au-Mg alloys, however, the “domain-like” structures were not observed.
