Abstract

Since the identification of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) as the immediate precursor of ethylene biosynthesis (1,2), the nature of the reaction converting it to ethylene has drawn considerable attention. Most of our knowledge of this reaction comes from studies using intact tissues as model systems (for a review see ref. 3). On the basis of the findings of these studies, it was suggested that membranes are involved in the reaction.
