Abstract
Besides the radio and hydromagnetic approximations there is another type of approximation to the general dispersion relation for a magnetoplasma. This depends on whether propagation in the direction of interest is roughly like that along the imposed magnetic field or roughly like that transverse to the imposed magnetic field [1, 2]. The concepts of quasi-longitudinal and quasi-transverse propagation apply at both high and low frequencies. They are therefore applicable, not only to the general dispersion relation, but also to the radio and hydromagnetic approximations [3,4].
