Abstract

Physicochemical interactions of heavy metals present in natural waters with interfaces of suspended particles, sediments and aquatic organisms depend strongly on the chemical forms (species) in which the dissolved metals exist in the respective natural water type (Stumm and Morgan, 1981). The resulting tendencies and potentialities of a heavy metal to accumulate at suspended particles has e.g. a decisive influence on the concentration regulation of heavy metals in the water column down to the bottom sediments (Breder et al., 1982; Sigg et al., 1982). In this context also determinations of the distribution of the total heavy metal content in the water column between the dissolved and suspended matter phase can be considered, taking a broad view, as belonging to the field of speciation studies, although in the future more detailed studies on the chemical states in which metals exist at or in the various types of suspended matter are very much needed.
