Abstract
In natural waters trace heavy metals are distributed between the dissolved and solid phase. In the dissolved phase heavy metals can exist as hydrated ions, labile complexes predominatly with the respective anionic inorganic constituents of water and nonlabile complexes with components of the dissolved organic matter (DOM). Among these complexing DOM components humic and fulvic acids are considered to be of major significance in speciation of heavy metal traces by DOM in natural waters.
