Part of the book series: Engineering Application of Fracture Mechanics ((EAFM,volume 3))

Abstract

The effects of internal, microscopic defects or discontinuities on the macroscopic behavior of materials is an important study in itself. Although materials scientists have long worked on the effects of dislocations in metals, crystal defects in ceramics, and internal cracking in glass, it has only been relatively recently that attention has been given to the characterization of internal defects in concrete.

The study of the character and mechanism of microcracking in concrete has been conducted by researchers in many institutions and in several countries. In lieu of presenting a comprehensive review of all such work, the authors have prepared a general summary of the work in the field with particular attention to the work performed at Cornell University from the early 1960’s to the present.
