Abstract

During the 1960s and 1970s a concerted effort was made to assemble collections of diverse germplasm of chickpea. As a result, over 12,000 kabuli and desi germplasm accessions have been assembled at ICRISAT, and over 4,400 kabuli accessions at ICARDA, these kabuli accessions have been evaluated for 29 characters, mainly at Tel Hadya in northern Syria (Singh and Malhotra, Chapter 10). Desirable genetic variability has been found for almost all the characters for which the kabuli accessions have been evaluated. Thus the stage is set for the utilization of germplasm; the national breeding programs in the countries served by ICARDA can make better use of the assembled germplasm for the development of cultivars during the 1980s.
