Abstract
Scleroderris canker caused by Gremmeniella abietina (Lagerb.) Morelet ( = Scleroderris lagerbergii Gremmen) was first recorded in Newfoundland in 1979 near St. John’s. The disease was detected in 1980 and 1981 at nine other locations in or near the city. Disease development and intensity of infection in a plantation were spectacular. The Province established a quarantine area in 1980 and jointly with Plant Quarantine Division of Agriculture Canada directed control by pruning and eradication. In 1982 the disease was detected at 60 km from St. John’s and outside the quarantine area. All cultures of the fungus were serologically identified as the European strain.
