Abstract
The twig-infesting scolytid beetles Pityophthorous pulicarius and P. puberulus were exonerated from the role of suspected vectors of Scleroderris canker but a significantly reduced rate of infections in red pines treated with the systemic insecticide carbofuran (FuradanR) indicated that insects may nonetheless exacerbate the disease outbreak by providing infection courts for windborn and rain-splashed conidia.
