Immunohistopathological Aspects of Cutaneous Melanoma and Precursor Lesions

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Developments in Oncology ((DION,volume 25))

Abstract

The presence of particular cellular chemical constituants can be demonstrated immunohistologically by visualizing the binding of specific antibodies to the constituants (antigens) in tissue sections. The nature of the antigen, especially its biological function or tissue distribution determines the significance of the immunohistochemical staining result. In histopathological examination of neoplasms or precursor lesions immunohistochemical findings can have great potential value for diagnosis, prognosis and for studies on pathogenesis.
