Abstract

The influence of breed on beef production in the UK is quite marked and a large number of sire breeds, with very different production characteristics, are used. The choice of beef breed varies both in suckler and in dairy herds. Farm recording schemes operated by MLC have shown consistent sire breed effects across different production systems (Allen and Kilkenny, 1980). In general the larger sire breeds produce faster growing progeny which are slaughtered at higher ages and heavier weights.
