Measurement of Grazing Behaviour and Herbage Intake on Two Different Grazing Management Systems for Beef Production

Two systems of grazing management for beef production were compared, a continuously grazed system with a 20 × 1 day rotational paddock grazing system at two stocking rates for three years. No difference was obtained in net herbage accumulation between the systems, but the high stocking rate reduced herbage production by 7.5%. Rotational grazing increased animal production per hectare by 33% at the high stocking rate and by 7.6% at the low stocking rate. Although the animals grazed pastures of different digestibilities, they always selected material of similar digestibility. The length of time spent grazing and the distance walked in the process was greater for the continuously grazed animals than for the rotationally grazed animals. Consequently the set stocked cattle had a 44% greater grazing energy expenditure than the rotationally grazed cattle. The efficiency of food conversion was greater under rotational grazing as a result of lower maintenance energy requirements.
