Abstract

The validity of the standard short term station test for the production systems applied in beef farming was investigated.

The comparison included 9 progeny groups with a total of 326 offspring, which were tested simultaneously on the standard short term test and under farming conditions.

Significant interactions between testing environment and farm environment have been shown, leading to distinct changes in ranking of the sires tested. The magnitude of the interaction increased with increasing differences between the testing environment and the production environment, both regarding fattening intensity and length of fattening period. Interaction in growth parameters was greater than for carcass conformation. These results indicate that the beef testing on stations should be organised to conform as closely as possible to the average fattening environment on farm.
