Performance of Bulls and Steers under Similar Feeding and Management Conditions

  • Chapter
Grassland Beef Production

Part of the book series: Current Topics in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science ((CTVM,volume 28))

Abstract

Work conducted in Ireland on the production of beef from bulls is reviewed. Bulls show greater rates of daily gain and greater carcass weights than steers slaughtered at the same age, provided they are well fed Their carcasses also give a greater yield of lean meat.

Care must be taken to minimise disturbances to their behaviour. Growth promoters may be used to increase the liveweight and carcass gain of steers but may affect their behaviour adversely.
