Summary

The experiments presented here examined the in vivo analgesic and respiratory effects of morphine after epidural and subcutaneous administration in rats.

Both subcutaneous and epidural injections of morphine exerted dose-dependentanalgesic effects. Analgesic effects measured in the tail flick test were biphasic. Both subcutaneous and epidural morphine produced dose-dependent respiratory depressant effects expressed by a decrease in the slope of the carbondioxide response curve.

Respiratory depression at the time of analgesic peak effect at equi-analgesic dosages of morphine was more pronounced after subcutaneous administration than after epidural adnministration.
