Abstract
The complexity of coastal and shelf environments arises from the interplay between chemical/biogenic grains or clastic sediment introduced into the system by rivers of variable power and the marine energy spectrum available in the form of wind-generated waves and tides. Add to this the many effects of the relatively recent Holocene rise in sea level (e.g. drowned coasts, shelf relict sediment patches) and it readily becomes apparent that coastal processes and their resultant facies must be carefully studied in both field and laboratory in an interdisciplinary manner.
