Abstract
Rivers are the connecting link between areas of sediment production in drainage basins and areas of coastal deposition. Many of the great coastal plains of the world also lie in areas of the crust that are prone to subsidence so that the alluvium may be preserved as stratigraphic sequences. Other important environments of deposition are interior drainage basins where terminal riverine cones may build up.
