Glycolipids and sulpholipids

Abstract

Glycolipids are compounds which have the solubility properties of a lipid and contain one or more molecules of a sugar. Bacteria have high molecular weight polymers containing lipids and sugars, called lipopolysaccharides, which are quite distinct from glycolipids in being water-soluble; these will be described in Chapter 6. The word sulpholipid is used here to describe any lipid containing sulphur, although the term is often used in a more restricted sense to describe a certain class of sulphur-containing lipids, as we shall see later. It is important to realize that the terms glycolipid and sulpholipid do not refer to any chemically distinct groups of compounds, but cover a wide range of chemical types; they merely indicate a particular chemical feature of the molecule i.e. the presence of sugar or sulphur.
