Abstract

Basic nitrogenous metabolites isolated from plants are called alkaloids. There are very many of them, and they have diverse structures [1, 2]. Yet an examination of these structures indicates that alkaloids can be classified within a few groups, as will be apparent from the discussion below. This is because they are formed very largely from a handful of α-amino acids, lysine, ornithine, phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan, and the skeletons of these amino acids are retained largely intact in the derived alkaloids. Mevalonate and acetate are further important starting points from primary metabolism.
