Abstract
The coronary-dilating action of adenosine and adenine nucleotides was first recognized by Drury and Szent-Györgyi (1929). These authors were also first to describe two additional effects of adenosine and AMP in the heart, namely the inhibition of impulse generation and conduction in the sinus and AV-node respectively, and the depression of contractile force in atrial muscle. In other early studies the action of adenosine on the sinus and the AV-node was shown to be species-dependent, lowering the frequency in cat, rabbit, rat and dog sinus node, and exerting its action in the guinea-pig heart primarily on the AV-node (for review see Drury, 1936).
