Abstract
One of the central problems of ecology is that of the role played by competition in determining the species composition of a community. There is an extensive literature on the experimental and theoretical nature of competition [e.g. 1, 10, 11] but here we may be satisfied with MacArthur’s simple definition: two species are competitors if an increase in either harms the other.
