Abstract
Discontinuities play a major role in determining the behaviour of rocks, particularly at or near exposures such as tunnel sidewalls, slopes, open cuts and foundations. Where major, open discontinuities exist, deformation may occur through movement along discontinuities and through rotation of blocks rather than through breakdown of the intact rock.
