Abstract
During the last 40 years the most striking industrial development along the South Wales coast has been the growth of modern iron and steel, and petrochemical industries (Fig. 7.2, 1–6). During the same period new urban growth centres and light-industrial estates (7–13) have also been established to redeploy the labour force released by the decline of the coal industry. Ports such as Swansea, Barry, Cardiff and Newport, originally established for coal-shipping, have now been reorganised to serve the new industries and a deep water harbour for iron-ore carriers has been built at Port Talbot.
