Industrial development

  • Chapter

Abstract

Industrial development can interfere with other interests in a variety of ways. Objection is raised to many industrial projects on the grounds that they are unaesthetic, and in recent years considerable progress has been made in the development of landscaping techniques to camouflage industrial sites. One of the ecologist’s particular roles in this connection has been to identify the factors which impede the growth of plants on various industrial wastes and to suggest ways to overcome these limitations. In recent years a number of comprehensive compilations of information in this subject have been published (Hutnik & Davis, 1973; Goodman & Chadwick, 1975; Goodman & Bray 1975) and only a few examples need to be mentioned here.
