Abstract
Monitoring systems are already in use in a number of industries. Such industries are usually capital-intensive and considerable financial penalties may arise from undetected malfunctions or may involve exceptional hazards such that, for reasons of safety, high levels of operational reliability are of equal or superior importance to considerations of financial obligations.
