Abstract
This book deals mainly with the interpretation of the visible and near ultra-violet spectra of flames, but it should not be forgotten that the major part of the radiation lies in the infra-red. The visible and ultra-violet emission seldom exceeds 0.4 per cent of the energy released by the combustion processes, and for some flames, such as the hydrogen flame, it is almost negligible. The infra-red part of the radiation is, however, much greater, varying usually between 2 per cent and 20 per cent of the heat released by the combustion.
