Abstract
Direct observation of the spectrum of a simple flame gives only a limited amount of information and much of the progress in the spectroscopic study of combustion reactions has been due to the development of special techniques. Some of these aim at controlling the form of the flame so that its structure can be examined in greater detail, while others are directed towards fundamental studies of the spectra emitted or absorbed during controlled chemical reactions or well defined excitation conditions.
