Weeds, pests and diseases in the growing crop

  • Chapter
Barley

Abstract

Weeds are wild plants growing in inconvenient situations, and also ‘volunteer’ plants from previous crops. By competing for space, water, mineral nutrients and light, they reduce yields. They may help pests and diseases to overwinter. They can make the crop ripen unevenly, and can also slow the rate and efficiency at which combine harvesters work. Weed residues in the straw or grain may reduce their value or acceptability. The reproductive bodies of species like wild onion (Allium vineale) and corncockle (Agrostemma githago) are poisonous and make grain unsaleable. All the treatments used to control weeds represent extra work and expense, so instead of eradication attempts are made to achieve control, so that the hoped-for extra yield and quality will at least pay for the costs incurred. Adequate control must be attempted every year, since a build-up of weeds may take several years and be laborious and expensive to control.
