Abstract
In this chapter some of the biochemical interconversions that take place in barley are outlined; other aspects are treated elsewhere (e.g. Chapters 5,6, and 14–16). Where data are lacking it has been assumed that ‘common’ metabolic pathways are operating. There is a deficiency of direct evidence relating to compartmentation of functions between subcellular organelles and the nature of the control mechanisms operating on metabolic sequences in barley. It should be noted that not all biochemical pathways that can operate in barley do so in each tissue, or all of the time. The metabolism of many tissues alters with age.
